Disease prevention for the home gardener
Disease prevention is an important consideration for any gardener, from the casual beginning gardener to the most experienced master gardener. Unfortunately, every gardener will eventually need to deal with and eradicate a disease condition, and there are a number of diseases to which plants and flowers are prone.
The first step to keeping these common plant and flower diseases at bay is to keep the plants as healthy as possible. Just as a healthy person will be better able to fight off infection, so a healthy plant will be able to resist those organisms to which a weaker plant would readily succumb. Keeping the plants in your garden in the best of shape should be an important first step to any disease elimination program.
While many common plant diseases can be prevented by proper gardening techniques, others are not so easily prevented. Fireblight, for instance, often appears when there is rain at a certain time of year. To prevent this ailment, therefore, would require the ability to control the weather.

Other common plant diseases, however, do display symptoms early, so it is important for the garden to be ever vigilant. It is important to examine the condition of the plants every time you are working in the garden. For instance, every time you are weeding or watering your plants, take the time to examine the leaves for holes, spots or other telltale signs of disease. If you do see any problems, it is important to identify the problem and start treatment immediately.
This early treatment is essential, since an untreated condition could easily spread throughout the entire garden. It will obviously be much more difficult to cure such a problem after it has spread, and catching and treating the problem right away will help to protect your valuable plants and your garden.
