Using native plants in the environment

The past couple of years have seen a resurgence of interest in using native species of flowers and plants in the garden landscape. Part of this is environmental, as native species tend to require less water and less artificial fertilizer than non-native species. But a large part of this trend is the fact that there are so many beautiful native species of plants, and the fact that they can provide a dramatic backdrop and add beauty to any landscape.
Landscaping with native varieties of plants and flowers saves the gardener work as well. Less fertilizer is needed, less weeding is required, and rainfall usually provides all the water needed by native plants. Some additional watering may be needed during long periods of drought, but native species tend to also be more drought tolerant than their non native brethren.
Choosing native species of plants and flowers often means choosing from among hundreds of varieties and dozens of colors. Choosing the right mixture may be difficult, but not because of lack of choice. Gardeners are free to experiment with the many varieties of native plants until they hit just the right balance.
Native plants and flowers can be used anywhere in the landscape, including as edging for vegetable garden, to add beauty to a driveway or pathway or even in a standalone flower bed. There are as many ways to use native varieties of plants and flowers as there are gardeners to use them.
Many garden centers have recognized this native trend and are catering to it. You will find a native plant section at many garden centers and home stores, and there are shelves full of books written on the subject of natural gardening. If you are unsure about what type of native plants to use, or how best to use them in your landscape, be sure to consult with an experienced gardener or with the staff at your favorite garden store.
As more and more people discover how easy it is to garden with native plants and flowers, the trend toward native gardening is only likely to grow. There are so many different varieties of native plants to choose from that the hardest part may be selecting the varieties that are right for your special garden.
